Resumen

Introduction. The use of reproductive biotechnologies has meant an important improvement of the efficiency and profitability in the swine industry. Objective. To determine the state of the art in which the applied biotechnology to semen study and their implementation; in pig farms; of assisted reproductive techniques such as artificial insemination. Development. In the swine industry, the fertility of boars (Sus scrofa domestica) has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of herd reproduction. Although there are objective methods of accurate assessment of the boar’s semen variables, many farms still carry out subjectively assessments. The biochemical concepts that determine the functionality of the spermatozoa are molecularly complex, however, the general aspects of functionality can be known, and semen management methods can be developed that allow the maintenance of the optimal conditions of the semen doses used in artificial insemination (AI). Within the sperm functionality, classical parameters of volume, concentration, and motility are involved, which are fundamental for the optimization of the seminal doses produced by boar. The CASA (Computer-assisted semen analysis) systems are a biotechnological application that displaces the traditional subjective semen analysis and provides a large data that have allowed us to explore in greater detail the boar ejaculates. Conclusions. Biotechnological semen processes are a tool for assessing seminal quality and optimizing seminal doses on farms that use artificial insemination.
